They Say the Workers are to Blame

From Wisconsin to Michigan to Iowa

To Indiana and Ohio

They say they have a budget shortfall

They say our union rights must go

The bankers ruined the economy

With speculation and other games

But when we have a budget shortfall

They say the workers are to blame

For companies like General Electric

Avoiding taxes is a game

Now when we have a budget shortfall

They say the workers are to blame

The teachers who out of their own pockets

Buy school supplies and don’t complain

Are under attack from politicians

Who say the teachers are to blame

The nurses, firefighters and bus drivers

And more public servants than you can name

Do nothing more than serve the community

And they deserve none of the blame

It’s corporate CEOs and politicians

Who play the privatization game

To stuff some wealthy person’s pockets

While saying the workers are to blame

They’re trying to bust our unions

By twisting facts; they have no shame

They’re trying to convince the people we serve

That public workers are to blame

So now they want to tax our pensions

While giving businesses a big tax break

Anyone can see that blaming the workers

Is an incredible mistake

Postal, federal, state and city workers

And students and seniors must unite

And put the blame where it belongs

And against our common enemy we must fight

We’ll mobilize, organize and rally

And come together all as one

And fight these battles all over the country

And keep on fighting till we’ve won
