MPWU Constitution states the duties of the position are:
The Director of Education shall plan and conduct a comprehensive program of Labor Education for Local members, members-at-large, and officers. The Director of Education shall coordinate Michigan Postal Workers Union, AFL-CIO training activities with those of the National Office, Educational Institutes, and other Labor Unions. The Director of Education shall plan, as a minimum, two (2) official Area Meetings shall be held in the State Constitution Convention year and one (1) official meeting held in the Educational Conference year (s). The area meetings will be rotated with three (3) areas to be determined numerically 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12. These Area meetings shall center on specific subject areas of interest and concern including legislation and stewards. Where there is a registration fee charged for Educational Conventions and/or Area District Meetings, APWU members belonging to the host local shall be charged 40% of the registration fee, provided they pre-register and only attend classes.
The Illinois Postal Workers Union, the Wisconsin Postal Workers Union, the Indiana Postal Workers Union, the Ohio Postal Workers Union, North & South Dakota Postal Workers Union, and the Minnesota Postal Workers Union shall be invited to at least two (2) of these assemblies per year. At least one of these educational meetings shall deal with human relations related issues.
